In cities across Canada residents are dealing with public transit that can not meet their needs current without funding from higher levels of government. We are pushing the federal government to provide operating funding to municipalities to improve public transit and strengthen our cities.
WHEREAS public transit systems across the country have been suffering from a lack of fare revenue since the pandemic due to a significant dip in ridership and a lack of stable operating funding from all levels of government,
WHEREAS this has caused significant funding deficits for municipal transit systems leading to unaffordable transit, service cuts and a lack of travel options especially for equity-deserving communities.
WHEREAS quality public transit is vital to making our cities and towns run and municipalities are already making significant investments in making their transit systems better and more environmentally friendly - and it’s time they had a federal partner to help
WHEREAS capital funding for transit alone will not help transit systems recover,
THEREFORE we, the undersigned residents of Canada, call on the federal government to create a permanent, direct, allocation-based funding mechanism so that municipalities receive regular injections of federal transit operating money to ensure the survival of our public transit systems.
